There are various schools of thought on this issue. My position is that the white tie could be perceived as somehow too famboyant and that you risk outshining the groom, which could be perceived as a faux-pas, if not a faute-de-gout, which has led to the demise (both social and physical- because it often may end up in a duel) of many gentlemen. However, since no gentleman should be seen attending such a social occasion without his sword-stick and trusted Webbley, I would personally opt for white.

Normally any "event" that occurs after 5 PM is considered black tie (or after 5 attire) unless otherwise stated in the invitation or by the host/ess.
