I am a British citizen but am here in the USA with permanent residency status. If I became a US citizen, would I relinquish my British citizenship? I had heard that the USA does not recognize dual nationality, but Britain does. If that is correct, what are the implications?

The United States requires you to renounce any other citizenship when you become a citizen, but British law specifically does not accept that kind of renunciation, so as long as you don't formally register any renouncement of citizenship, you can easily be a dual citizen.

Go to the immigration web site but my understanding is that you don't give it up unless you yourself do something inconsistent with your American Citizenship (like take a Commission in the British Army.) If you were American first and took an oath to become a British citizen it could hurt you. America disfavors dual citizenship, but doesn't entirely ban it.

You should get the details, though.

Nope, I have dual citizenship. My dad was from Britain, mom from USA, my dad gained US citizenship (there's a big long test, though--I helped him study) and got to keep his old citizenship. All our family has both Brittish and American passports. If either one is being with-held to us, I'm not aware of it. Of course, the rules might've changed since all the terrorist attacks.
