I have never used a convection microwave, so I may be wrong about this, but I think they use a heating element to heat the oven, then circulate the hot air around to cook food. The Advantium does not have an element for heating air; it uses visible light and microwaves to cook the food. The visible light browns the food like a normal oven would. The Advantum does not need to pre-heat, in fact it is not an option. The cavity does not get hot like a regular oven in order to cook food (although it gets hotter than a simple microwave). The Advantium is classifed as a speedcook oven. The food is put in before the oven is started (no preheat). A conventional microwave cooks food faster than a conventional oven, so I suppose it could be considered a speedcooker, although there are foods that don't turn out too well (pizza, breaded foods, etc). There are very few foods the Advantium won't cook quite well.
The Trivection does not use visible light to cook. It is primarily a convection oven with a microwave assist to cook the inside of food as well as the outside.
We have a small family (three) and both parents work. We get by with the Advantium 99% of the time, and actually have rarely used the Trivection.

I use my microwave quite a bit, for meals and reheating. For cooking meat, the trick is to have enough liquids. I use a lot of soya sauce for tenderizing, such as mixing a few tbsp's with cr.of mushroom soup and adding on top of pork chops. Also, cook chicken with chicken noodle soup on top. OH, always cover the dish AND cook meat on 50 or 70 percent power - never on high as it dries it and ruins it.
Maybe think about a toaster oven. This is another appliance I use quite often, especially great when making a quick meal for one. You can do things such as heat mini pizza's or pizza pockets, much like a conventional oven, but with no pre-heating and WAY less hydro usage. Plus it makes great toast! It does take getting used to if you've never used one, but it is an investment I am glad I made since we use ours at least 2x a day for toast and other things. You can cook anything in it that you would put in an oven, but on a smaller scale (obviously). I prefer it to the microwave for things like breads and battered foods (fish, pogo's, etc).
Good luck

If you just want to use it for reheating, the traditional will do. The convections and others cost a lot more.

I dont know if one is better than the other. However, if you pick up a good microwave cookbook you can make just about anything.
