It takes a long time for you teeth to move like that. Your teeth are pretty much set in their position so trying to adjust them isn't as easy as you think. The rubber bands are meant for different things depending on what your orthodontist has said, but most of the time they are used to fix an overbite or underbite or to bring certain teeth down to the same level as the others.

Braces need to be on for so long because teeth have a tendency to want to go back where they started if they are not held in place long enough. Just a reminder to wear your retainer after your braces are off! The retainer should help to keep the teeth in place. The retainer only needs to be worn at night. The rubber bands are to help move some of the top teeth into better alignment with the bottom teeth, I think.

I'm wearing braces now, and of course, they need long time to get the teeth back to straight again. The rubber bands are to move your teeths were they were supposed to be, and keep it them until they can stand there by their own.

They need to be on for so long because they straighten the teeth slowly. Nobody would want them to be straightened fast. That would hurt really bad.
The rubber bands are to keep the tension tight so the teeth can slowly move into the correct position over time.

braces are on for a long time because if you move the teeth too fast - you can cause nerve damage or root resorption. the rubber bands guide the teeth to the new position.

The teeth need to move very slowly. The bands help keep pressure on the teeth that need to move.

It's a very gradual process . Rubber bands are a part of the constant tension required for this process.

Because it takes a really long time to get your teeth straightened since your teeth took a very long time to grow and it needs to get back in shape.
