I have my suspicions about this man whom I characterize as a Byronic hero type, age 35, but I am not 100% sure if he really is a player. I want to believe he is not, so please remind me/inform me of the red flags.

Does he think he's all that?
Does he make the preverbial booty call, or how are you today call?
Does he take you out for a meal, without expecting sex?
Does he frequent bars?
How long is his chick list for numbers?
Do you know anyone who knows him?
Do u c him in rather short relationships with women gathered round in a circle crying cause hes done the same things to everyone of them?
Is he always glad to see you when u pop up, or glad when it is convienient for him?

Well they will definitely flirt with other girls. Watch or look at other girls. Be aggressive with you or maybe its not you in this position but maybe someone else you know. Won't tell you anything, but assumes you tell him everything, or you must tell him everything. Yells at you when you've done something bad, but when he does something bad he wants you to forgive him. And the occasional attitude.

how many girls are in the phone book of his cell phone? are they related? if not, he probably is a player.
