Doesn't matter. My ring bearer was my nephew, but that was because he was who fell in the age range of the ring bearer.

The child doesn't even have to be related.The boy usually 4-8 years old.Walks down in a tux with a fancy pillow (you can get both the fake rings and the pillow at a bridal store)with fake rings tied to it.The bestman and maid of honor hold the real ones.I suggest paying for the pillow and the fake rings so that you can keep it as a keepsake.

i don't think it even matters, pick a friend who has a young child if your family or his doesn't have one. its not a big deal if they are related or not.
