Many states require yearly vaccinations because the vets like the money. However, the rabies vaccination is good for 3 years here, and in the state I just moved from (California and Oregon) The shots are actually good for 7 years or more. If you email me your state and county, I will tell you what your state's requirements are.

Depends...in areas where rabies is endemic the suggestion is yearly vaccinations for pets, in areas where there are few reports of rabies the suggestion is vaccinate every 3 years. The dog can have a rabies titer done to see if there are adequate circulating antibodies to rabies. If the dog has an adequate titer then technically it shouldn't pass on an infection even if it has been exposed to rabies itself.
I'm sure more concern is being placed on whether or not it is a dangerous dog. This unfortunately is swayed by breed (eg. Pit bulls are more likely to be euthed because of their breed disposition for being dangerous dogs than maltese terriers which are more commonly involved in biting humans but are cute fluffy little white things that don't look like they could hurt a fly - although granted Pit bulls would do more damage than a maltese).
I suggest your friends get a lawyer, letters from their vet etc.. to have expert opinion on the dogs behaviour. Was there an eye witness that saw the attack? How bad was the attack? Multiple bites or just one? How was the dog provoked? These questions need to be addressed.

That all depends on the state you are in. Some states require a rabies vaccination every year, other only require every 3 years. Proof of such vaccine is also required. Again as to what will happen is also up to state and county laws. Other factors are the 'rap sheet' of the dog. Is there any vicious history with the dog? Have the owners gotten tickets for running at large, ect? Make sure the family knows when the court case is and that they attend.

That depends on where you live. In the South a rabies vacine only last for one year. In the north or colder climates, it could last as long as 2 years. Just because the dog has not had a rabies vacine in the last 3 years does not mean the dog has rabies. The bad news is the dog has to be put down in order to be tested for rabies. Good luck.

It's not a matter of how long the shot lasts. It is the law of the state that matters. There are one and three years rabies vaccines. That is how long the manufacturer tested them for. Dr. Ron Schultz of Wisconsin University has shown that all rabies shots are good for 7 years. A copy of his report, published in 1999, can be found at www.cedarbayvet.com/duration_of_immunity.htm
All of his articles can be found at www.ivis.org . It is a free sign up vet site. Anybody can sign up.
If your state allows it, ask that a titer test be done. It is a blood test that shows if the dog has immunity for rabies.

a rabies shot last a year in dogs and cats whether or not the dog gets put down depends on the laws where it lived my brother got bit by a neighbors dog as he rode his bike by their house their dog had never had a shot so they had to pay for my brother to have a series of painful shots to make sure he didnt get rabies and i think they had to pay fines for not getting the dog vaccinated but i believe that they still have the dog in this case the dog will probably be punished for its owners neglect of him and neglect of the children who were not supervised and allowed around an animal who was not vaccinated

I´ve heard dogs must get their vaccines once a year.
I once was bitten by a cat and they gave me 14 shots in my back.
Really painful. Sorry but I wouldn´t care too much about the dog. But I still care about the kid´s health, he probably was seriously injured besides the fact he probably needs to receive a few rabies vaccines.

It depends on what state u live in as to how long the shot is good for, in north carolina the shots are good for three years, in texas it is only one year. so sad about the dog being put down, and the kids were horrible to mistreat the dog.
