why was there totalitarianism in Europe after WWI?

Because people had ideas and beliefs which supported totalitarianism! Leaders needed totalitarianism in order to control people!

Fear of communism led to people trading up liberty for security and ironically, the best way to achieve security is to be totalitarian

People neede hope. Countries and people were devastated by war. Totalitarianists offer hope of a better futur, patriotis, and sympathize.
