Beef Jerky Cost

making jerky is easy and not expensive, most people can do it at home with a simple food dehydrator. The reason it is expensive is becuz the finished product is only a 10th of the size it started from. The moisture is removed from the meat, which makes it smaller. 16oz of jerky started out as a few lbs of meat. Conisdering a 2 lb steak can be $5-$10 raw, it seems reasonable that the same steak would cost the same after it was reduced to just a few onces. Ground beef is the left over peices from when the steaks are trimmed. They mix the trimming with the fat , grind it all up , and you have ground beef. That's why they have an 80-20 ratio on the pack, 80 % beef with 20% fat. And yes jerky comes from the same cow.

Like one guy said, it takes a lot of beef, but then they suck all the water out and it doesn't amount to much. I think they use better cuts of beef, too, not anything like ground beef. I know what you mean, it's such a bummer because my kids love it but I don't buy it very often since it's so pricey. If you like it alot, you should definitely try making it yourself. It should be pretty easy with one of those food dehydration machines. Also, when I do buy it I usually go to Costco or Sam's Club because you seem to get more for your money there.

Perhaps the procedure of making it. My mom makes it once in a while. If you have a dehydrator, you can slice up steaks or brisket, (NOT ground beef), season it with peppercorn, worcstershire sauce and whatener you want, and make beef jerky. It CAN even be done on a smoker grill.

Takes a lot of beef to make a little jerky. Once you remove all the water it doesn't amount to very much.

It takes a LOT of beef to dry down to get the little bit you have in the package. PLUS it has to be specially dried and treated. Wine is more than grape juice. Prunes are more than plums and raisins are more than grapes. Same reasons.
