I'm not in favor of leaving children at recreational places without responsible supervision. If they can come and go without anyone in charge, it is not safe to leave them. You need to stay there, or find someone who will agree to be responsible for them. You need to spend some time at the facility yourself and judge if you think it is a safe place.

It is never safe to drop children off anyplace you don't know about.

YMCA's vary greatly from city to city and state to state. I live very near the biggest YMCA in the country. It has an amazing fitness center, a great climing wall, something like 8 pools (both indoor and out), a gymnastics room, an indoor soccer arena, a skatepark, etc etc, way too much to list here. I would leave my kids there in an instant, its an amazing resource. On the other hand, I have been past a couple of inner-city YMCA's that are about a half step better than being a homeless shelter. In fact, they may be homeless shelters. So it really depends on what kind of Y you live close to, some are super-great, some I wouldnt leave my kid in if you paid me.

Have not been to a Y in a long time.....but i grew up at the Y. Mom taught aerobics classes so we had free membership..spent summers in camp there. Used to ride my bike there to work out or go swimming (that was when I was older) but our Y was residential (houses and apts) and commerical--the hospital was up the street and the street was full of Drs offices. I have fond memories of the Y. Oh, and my brother worked there too, he was a lifeguard!
