It probably thinks it sees a mate or friend in the reflection of your window. try taping strips of aluminum foil to various places on your window (outside) so they flutter and it will scare the bird away.

Probably the finch has his nest nearby and is trying to warn you off. The behavior will stop when the babies have hatched out, fletched out and flown away.
We had the same problem last year with a cardinal. I tried putting some red tomatoes in the window, hoping he would think they were some other red birds and it would scare him off. It didn't help at all. It was a minor annoyance, but we got through it ok.

I would watch out. My mom always told me that if a bird is trying to get in your house that it is a sign of a death in the family. I am 21 years old and I still belive it to this day.

get a child's windmill or something that moves and put it outside where the bird is pecking and hopefully he will go away and find a new home.

"shoot it"? it is a poor defenseless animal - what an ignorant thing to say.
put something scary outside your window so that it won't want to peck it - aluminum foil perhaps, or bird figurine, something like that.
