Bipolar disorder (previously known as manic depression) is a diagnostic category describing a class of mood disorders where the person experiences states or episodes of depression and/or mania, hypomania, and/or mixed states. Left untreated, it is a severely disabling psychiatric condition. The difference between bipolar disorder and unipolar disorder (also called major depression) is that bipolar disorder involves "energized" or "activated" mood states in addition to depressed mood states. The duration and intensity of mood states varies widely among people with the illness. Fluctuating from one mood state to another is called "cycling" or having mood swings. Mood swings cause impairment not only in one's mood, but also in one's energy level, sleep pattern, activity level, social rhythms and thinking abilities. Many people become fully disabled - for some period of time - after being diagnosed, and during this time may have great difficulty functioning.

Also known as manic-depression ...
The sufferer will have periods of mania (extreme highs - characterized by little sleep, shopping frenzies, creativity, increased libido, and seemingly limitless energy), followed by stupendous crashes (deep, dark depressions - characterized by an unwillingness to do anything. Possible thoughts of suicide, listlessness and disinterest.)
These swings can vary in intensity ... but the feelings are still there. This is a CHEMICAL imbalance that can be controlled with a number of different medications (i.e. Lithium, Depecote ...). Bipolar disorder should NOT be confused with clinical depression.
This disorder can be researched on a number of websites.

What are the signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder?
Bipolar disorder is characterized by two extremes - the polar opposites that give the condition its name.
Signs and symptoms of the manic phase (Bipolar I):
euphoria, feeling "high"
agitation, edginess, irritability, restlessness
racing thoughts, talkativeness
increased energy, sleeplessness
inflated self-esteem; grandiosity; poor judgment
reckless spending sprees or other activities with high potential for painful consequences
delusions or hallucinations
drug or alcohol use
increased sexual drive
aggressive behavior
inability to concentrate well
Hypomania (Bipolar II) refers to an episode with less extreme symptoms than full-blown mania.
Although bipolar disorder can be diagnosed from just a manic episode, most persons with this disorder also experience the other extreme, depression.
Signs and symptoms of the depressive state:
abnormally low mood
sadness and hopelessness
excessive feelings of guilt and worthlessness
difficulty concentrating or making decisions
changes in appetite or weight (increase or decrease)
fatigue; changes in sleep patterns (increase or decrease)
loss of self-esteem
diminished interest in daily activities
withdrawal from others
drug or alcohol use
suicidal thoughts, plans or attempts.

Manic-depression.
A person goes from periods of mania (frenzy, high-energy, possible insomnia, possible irrational behavior like gambling or buying a sportscar) to periods of depression. For example, a manic-depressive might be in mania and blow their entire life savings, only to come down into a horrible depression.
Sometimes manic-depressives don't want to take medication because they can get so much accomplished during manic periods.
Not all manic-depressives are as severe as my examples.

bi-polar is a type of depression where you swing from one extreme to another. You can be insanely happy and think life is absolutely wonderful and then sink into the deepest darkest depths of despair. Check out manic depression.

bi-polar is kind of tricky, its all in a persons mood, you have very high points in which your happy and love the world, and the very next second be so depressed you want to die or even harm others for the smallest infraction, bi-polar people can even sometimes seen to be schizophrenic because of these drastic mood changes, medical help IS necessary weather it be medication or counseling

You will be really nice one minute then really mean the next. You don't really have multiple personalities, but your feelings, emotions, and actions change from one extreme to the other. Everyone is different though.
