women believe that crunches are the best way to trim fat off the belly. But crunches only firm the area. To reduce fat and slim down, you need to burn calories by doing cardiovascular exercise. And because the cells in your tummy have more fat-burning enzymes than other areas of your body, you'll see a difference in just weeks. "Women who work out regularly lose more fat from their middle compared to elsewhere in their body," says Anne McTiernan, M.D., Ph.D., a researcher at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle who has studied fat loss in women. Experts now recommend that you get 60 to 90 minutes of exercise every day to control body weight. We've created a simple plan that helps you squeeze that amount into your day -- even household chores count! Start by doing one low-cardio activity (see "Do these belly-slimming moves," below) for 30 minutes every day. As you get stronger, add another 30 minutes of a second low-cardio activity or try one from the medium-cardio list (see below), which will add fitness benefits by increasing your heart rate. If you don't have 60 (or even 30) straight minutes a day, break your routine up into 10- or 15-minute sessions. Just get moving and watch your belly shrink!

Cardiovascular excercise is the way to go. Just a couple miles a day jogging will do the trick :) Sit ups will just build muscle underneath the fat.
