Soak them in water before adding the meat and veggies. Best thing is to soak them, then immediately assemble then cook right away.

to prevent any wooden skewers from burning soak in cold water for at least 10 minutes. I use metal skewers because they are easier to handle.they have a loop on the end so its easier to pick up.
