It's because Americans don't feel the need to study another language-they think everyone speaks English anyway.
Despite the fact USA is a quilt of different cultures, they all assimilate in no time, and the prodigy of an immigrant rarely speak their parents' language. It's a closed and complacent society, with little or no respect for any culture outside USA.
"We are the best, we are the the first, no one else matters" is the common attitude. At school foreign languages are not taught well and students barely study one language, which they rarely master...And even if you learn another language, if you don't practice it, you forget it.
I think that is a great disadvantage for Americans, because they are understood wherever they go, but they don't understand anybody ...

I think it's because the way the USA is geographically located. If you look at the map, the USA is only between Canada (which speaks mostly English and some French), and Mexico (which does have a bit of English but a Spanish language that is typically easy to learn and identify).
If you look at the European nations, you have lots of countries that speak differently. These include Danish, Turkish, German, French, and even Italian. There are many more but these are some of the most widely used languages as people travel back and forth between these countries.

Hello,
Remember in the olden days . USA wasn't what it is today. It was Native indian americans. White caucasians that settled in america now are originally from Europe.
English is one of the wide spread language that an abundance of people speak all over the world. Every country has different languages some influenced others like Britian, Spain, Portugal.
Take care

Necesity: When you live in Europe you need to learn the language of your country and the languages of the countries that are near to you because each country is usually the size or a bit bigger that any state in the US or Mexico. When you live in the US, you live in a very big country that probably you'll never get to explore completely and that is next to only 2 different languages: Spanish and French, but, if you go to Canada everybody can understand you in English, and in Mexico lots of people speak this language too, so, you survive only with English.
Still I think that knowing lots of languages can help you a lot, I mean, if I only spoke Spanish (my native language) I wouldn't be able to answer this

The biggest reason is that the Americans only care about the English language despite schools currently having students speak other languages outside of English.

Because even though American schools do teach other languages besides English, all Americans care about is learning English, while in Europe the schools are probably more stict at making students learn the second languge or many in Europe try to learn English too since it is considered the "international language".
good luck.

Hey! It's easy. People in USA speak mostly English language because this is an international language. Wherever they will go everybody will understand them...We know our native languages+English (it's necessary).

It's easy! Ppl in America say "Why do I need to know other languages if we have no other countries around us speaking foreign?",....except Mexico, Canada,...blabla,....while in Europe,....from early ages children are taught (from the verb tot each,...maybe wrong spelling :P ) lots of languages by parents/schools,..etc+they have at least 3 or 4 Countries around their own country so it's a MUST for them to learn other languages,.....hope I made myself understood

Because 90% of the people in the US only come in contact on a daily basis with English speakers. The other 10% come in contact with Spanish speakers a little. If you don't come in contact with other languages, you don't need to learn them.
