My best friends husband of 5 months is AWOL. He keeps saying he's going back but he never does. I think he's just being a leech because he's not even trying. Plus I'm worried that he might be abusing her.

Your best bet is to call local law enforcement. If he his truly AWOL then he will be picked up and brought to jail. He will wait for extradition to the post to which he is assigned. As far as the abuse I would do the same thing. After the Army gets him they can try him for abuse or let the civilian courts take care of that.
Either way contact local law enforcement.

if he is AWOL the military probably already reported him. If he is stopped by a cop for anything they will run a check on him and find that he is wanted for being AWOL.

Perhaps you should call the police. Don't use the 911 emergency line. Look up in the phone book the other non-emergency line. Tell the police operator you know the location of an AWOL soldier and why you are worried about your best friend.

Hey the way you do it is call the local police department and let them know that you know of someone who has been awol for the past ? months and they will check there data base and there will be a Federal warrent out for the arrest of that soldier. They will then go over there and pick up that soldier. The reason I know I have done it to about 3 soldiers myself and I'm currently a SSG in the Army.

The persons unit could go over there and tell the soldier to report back to duty but that wont go well so the unit could tell the police he has been AWOL for that many months and they will tack the police over there or the police will go over there them selfs.

Well, If he is AWOL, all you have to do is call the police. His Social is already in the system like a outstanding warrant. The police can go out there, even if there is a suspicion of abuse. So go ahead alert the authorities. His pay should be suspended anyway. So he is not a leech.

If he has been gone longer than 30 days then he is a deserter and there is a warrant for his arrest.

Simply report him to the police for domestic violence and they will discover the warrant when they run his records.

Now for the bad news - the military is not going to waste their time on this loser. Once they get him back he will be processed out with a 'Less Than Honorable' discharge. Then he will return home - and continue to leech.
