An American trying to find a job in Paris...?

What would an American have to do to move out to Paris to find a job and a place to stay?

If you want to live anywhere overseas and work you'll find it very difficult. Other countries are even less hospitable to illegal entrants than the United States.

There are however reasonable and legal ways to do it.

1. Join the army. If you're young and otherwise unskilled this may be the best way. This may not get you to Paris but Germany, the UK, Spain, and Italy all border France and have large American military installations.

2. Join the Diplomatic Service. American embassies and consulates around the world employ American nationals in a wide variety of jobs. Again this may not get you to Paris right away but its a start.

3. Go to work for an American company that has a presence in France. One of my buddies, a fellow lawyer, was working for an American company that opened a subsidiary in Paris. Next thing he knew he was made the President of the subsidiary and transferred there.

4. Open a business in Paris. I have another friend who operates a small publishing business in France and there are quite a few Americans who have opened bars or restaurants in Paris.

As a non-EU citizen you'd have to have a work permit.
I think it's easier get one if you get your employer to apply for it for you.
