i've never drove a car. i only have experience in SUVs and trucks. we dont own any cars. my mama owns a 94 explorer, but we've had many problems with it but its still a good vechicle and i have a lot of experience driving it. so i'm sticking to the SUVs and thanks for all of ya'll's comments really appreciate it.

I CAN HELP WITH THE EXPLORER,IT WAS A GOOD S U V BUT THE GAS MILAGE ON THE OLDER SUV's WAS NOT THAT GOOD. ALSO YOU HAVE TO BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN DRIVING ONE THEY ARE DIFFERENT AND HANDLE VERY DIFFERENT THAN A CAR. I WOULD STICK WITH A V W UNTIL YOU GET MORE EXPERANCE DRIVING.

I currently have a '97 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo 4.0 with towing package. I really recomend it. Maintenance is easy for the diy'r, and not terribly expensive for anyone else. Also, because of the design, you don't lose any milage when you run the full time 4wheel(selectrac, not quadratrac, less complex, less things to go wrong)Depending on conditions, ie:fuel type, road conditions, I average between 20 and 25 MPG highway, and 18-20 in town. Plus you can fit 5 people and a large dog in it comfortably. Also, it's one of the better handling and safer SUVs. I'll probably never drive anything else(maybe a wrangler when my kids get older. The Explorer has 2 problems. 1)Narrow wheelbase(tips easier) and 2)it's a Ford(difficult to work on, expensive parts) I've never heard anything good about Durango's except the fact that Rob Zombie drives one. Transmission problems, brake problems, engine problems, and very expensive to fix.
Overall, I'd say go with the Grand cherrokee.

I have personally driven and sold Jeep Wrangler, Grand Cherokees and Durangos. All seem to be great vehicles and fun to drive.. If you want lots of power get a Durango, if you want fuel economy then stay away from SUVs. If you want all around fun and versitilty, then go with a Jeep. Grand Cherokee has great towing capacity, but Wrangler is all around better off road, uptown and downtown. The drawback is low towing capablities and hardly any storage.

First, I would like to point out that insurance for your age group (16 to 24) is the cheapest when you are the primary driver for a 4-door sedan. Okay, that said, several SUV's are reliable and can get good gas mileage depending on how you drive. As for price, well, that depends where you live in relation to what is available. I might suggest that if you intend only to drive on pavement, you might want to look at 2 wheel drive SUV's. They are made to be advertised at a low price point when new, they are as reliable as 4 wheel drive models and in some cases, get better gas mileage. Keep in mind that unless you are driving in mud or deep snow, 4 wheel drive does not really afford you any greater safety than 2 wheel drive. If you want something that is the safest on the road during inclimate weather than a front wheel drive will offer the best performance. Again, this depends on how you drive.
