when you clip a dogs nails there is a color variation to the nails, usually you can see what they call a bloodline,it usually looks pink, you can trim up to just right before the pink, but no further, because if you do it will bleed and be painful!as long as you dont see blood you havent trimmed to far back!and no dog likes to have this done and they all try to pull back!if its just whining its most likely, that it is just aggrivated that you are doing it, but if its whelps andcries you are hurting it!

We use a large nail clipper that is the same as the type used for humans
You can buy special one at the dog/pet supply houses
Be careful and only cut about 1/4 of an inch in big dogs and 1/8 in small ones
Just the end

BE VERY CAREFUL. YOU CAN MAKE HER BLEED!
If you cut too much you will make her bleed and that will traumatize her even more.
I had this problem with one of my dogs. You will need to gain her trust if you want to do this on a regular basis. If you're not sure of your technique ask a vet or groomer to show you.
Generally, If she has white/clear nails you can see the "pink cuticle". Cut 1/6" BEFORE that. If her nail is black it is much more difficult to tell. AGAIN, BE VERY CAREFUL! Once I accidentally clipped my dog's nail just a tiny bit too much and she bled all over the carpet.
On the other hand, I've been very sucessful with my mother-in-laws dog and I'm the only one she trusts to cut her nails.
There's a simple solution if you want to avoid trimming nails all together - taker her out wakling (on pavement not grass) more often. My Maggie has not had her nails trimmed in two years because we take her roller blading.

First, your dog must trust you. Get her to lay on her side in front of you. Pet and touch her ears, belly, paws,...... Practice this for a couple of weeks. I did this with 2 Dobermans and cutting their nails is much easier and less stressful than what I have witnessed with friends' dogs. Also, Kwick-Stop Styptic Powder is recommended by my vet in case you trim too close and she starts bleeding.

If you have never clipped nails before, it might be wise to have the vet , or a groomer show you how. If you clipp them too short, she'll never trust you again.
Or ask a neighbor with a dog to show you.

You can use the broad, rough emory board that is used for acrylic nails. It works pretty fast, and dogs don't seem to mind as much. Just handle her feet alot when you are loving on her.

I think you just have to try harder, if this is the first time you've tried it then she might just be scared.
