of my five year old son. My son is extremely smart. He loves to draw and he draws in a lot of detail. Recently, he drew a storyboard and wrote a story to go with it, and he did it all himself. I was very surprised. Is this something that a normal 5 year old does or is this a little above average?

It is very hard by the casual observer to decide what is considered 'average' or 'above average'. These types of things are hard to quantify because alot of it is relative to the observer. You may consider your little boy a genius while a professional may not. If you truly want to put a number or score to his ingenuity, you can always go to a child psychologist for standardized tests. Of course, these are usually pretty expensive. In my opinion, the best thing you can do is provide an encouraging environment for which he develop his creativity. He sounds like a pretty creative kid to me!

My oldest son is 5. He likes to draw and tell a story with his drawing, but his picture needs to be explained. It's not drawn clear or detailed.

is he in school? if he is, thats right where he should be. If he is not in school.... i would say that he is above average, and keep encouraging him. He is going to be a very smart boy. Way to go!

this is way above average. does he go to kindergarten yet? if he does, look at his school work and time him on how fast he does it. if it is fast, like about 5 min. i would say yes, he is VERY smart for his age. boost him up to 1st grade.

That's pretty good!! My son is also 5, and I don't think that he would do that. He does do other things that surprise me though. I think they all have their areas that they excel in. Encourage it though, it's great. It would make a good keepsake too. God Bless
