I’m just looking for everyone’s view point on this. Please do not be hateful or mean in your responses I’m looking for an honest discussion. Are you for or against this, and why?
My opinion:
I think gay marriage should be made legal. Many people say it should be banned because the bible says so, but the US was founded on religious freedom. Besides alternative life-stylists are not looking for validation from the church, they simply want the union to be honored in a legal sense, so if one were to die the other would be protected the same that any straight widow would be. It about civil rights, not about religion. Don’t forget the US did not honor the union of African Americans, and other minorities, for a while. Should anyone find love in this huge world and wish to dedicate their lives to one another then they should be free to and to be protected under the marriage laws and provisions, gay or straight.

Great points so far, and I see the point to call it a civil union instead of marriage.

I believe marriage should be for anyone who wishes it whether you are marrying the opposite sex or the same sex. Anyone should have the right to marry the person they love and have that union legally protected so that when it comes to things like medical/dental insurance benefits, life insurance beneficiaries and other joint legal holdings everything is equal among everyone. To make homosexual couples call it a 'civil union' denigrates them to the status of second class citizens and takes a step backwards in our social growth.

I think it is ridiculous to ban gay marriage. Why shouldn't everyone have the freedom to love whom they choose. Bush keeps saying they need to ban it to keep the values of family safe in America. How about the gay couples that adopt children. Shouldn't their children be able to see their parents honoring each other in their monogamous relationship. What kind of insurance issues does it bring up when the parents aren't married. I think they deserve equal rights like everyone else. People need to really think how they would feel if they were told that they couldn't marry who they love. Remember when people threw a fit over mixed race marriage. I am hoping in a few years we will be looking back and saying why was this ever an issue.

There is no way to argue the issue of gay marriage without bringing in religion. This is a big no-no in politics; there is a separation of church and state for a reason. Therefore, I find the whole debate ridiculous. Politically, why shouldn't gay couples unite in matrimony? There is no problem politically, the problem is with the religious right trying to convert everybody to fundamental Christianity. It is B.S.

I totally agree with you except I think it should be called civil unions, because I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. But with that civil union should be the same rights as in any marriage. I just dont think it should be called marriage is all.

First:
1 a (1) : the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law (2) : the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage b : the mutual relation of married persons : WEDLOCK c : the institution whereby individuals are joined in a marriage.
(From Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary)
So, marriage as defined in this definition contains "Gay marriage". While I have no particular problem with this definition in most cases, I do have serious concerns with the section "contractual relationship recognized by law"- as it violates the first ammendment guarantee that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" as I have a closely held belief that marriage is sanctioned by God and not the "State", and considering that marriage licenses (from the "state") were not required until the issue of white men marrying black/*****/African American women (at the time the question of black MEN having any such freedom being totally beyond question- not right or moral, but true) became an issue for debate.
This being said, the current furor over Same Sex marriage is merely a two-fold propaganda tool- first fold, the Religious Right is being wooed by the "Powers that Be" as they pander to the hatefilled divide the RR tries to instill in the American conciousness to further their chase after a theocracy. Second fold, the "Powers that Be" have the perfect foil to keep the American people from looking at genuinely important issues, such as the rapid erosion of our Constitution, Institutions and Liberties by the "War on Terror", the "War on (some) Drugs", and other like issues which certainly carry far more import than who loves whom. Please, people, pay attention to the REAL issues out there- the Federal Government is not only "sponsoring terror" it is stealing the very fabric of our nation- let whomever wishes to marry do it, and start working to preserve what we are supposed to hold dear- LIBERTY!
(And just to make my position clear I am a Christian and regard the Religious Right as a clear threat to MY religious freedom as is the Federal Government to all my other liberties- and my religious freedom- and I say let those who wish to marry, marry- even if I don't quite agree with their views- they are STILL entitled to liberty! And I'm not referring to only Gays- there are others out there whose views on marriage I find not totally in agreement with mine- they still have rights, just as I do- and deserve to exercise them, just as I do.)

Marriage did after all come from the bible. The state marriage was a corruption of that.Marriage is for a man and a woman. It is not a civil rights thing,A gay male still has to go to a male prison and a lesbian to a woman's prison. If they need a legal recourse let them ask for that not marriage.

You just draw the line on whats right or wrong in a different place.
I believe that anything gay is wrong. Do you think its okay for some people to be cruel to animals, or children or black people?
You gotta draw the line in a safe place, or you will be dealing with things you can't even imagine.

I think it's a political move. We are all equal in the eyes of God. Is that not true? That means that men and hetero couples, gay couple and lesbian couple have no difference. You love the soul of the person, not the shell it is housed in.
