Absolutely without a doubt - Melbourne. I have lived in both ciities (I grew up in Sydney) and Melbourne just has a better atmosphere. You'll understand once you've experienced both. The night clubs are better in Melbourne also. Melbourne is more culturally diverse - great restuarants too.

Nightlife in terms of dining out and/or enjoying a night doing 'nightly' activities I would sway for sydney. There are so many places you can do to do things. Walking down the streets in Melbourne CBD on a saturday night, it felt like it was a ghost town.

Nightlife in terms of going clubbing, then Melbourne would do it for me. Took a holiday there last year and the people there party much harder, there are clubs everywhere, the average cover charge is $10 instead of the $15-$20 in Sydney, and most open past 3am, which is usual closing time in most Sydney clubs - more out of your buck!
