I usually defrost meat in the fridge for about two days before I am going to prepare it. At the time of preparation, I usually marinate the meat the night before or make sure the meat is at room temperature before I cook it.

A good site to check for this type of thing is www.epicurious.com.

I stay away from the microwave as well...no matter what, it always ends up cooking the meat a bit around the edges. Gross.

Good luck!

In the fridge, slowly, is the best way!!

But if it's COOL in your kitchen you could try defrosting it on the counter... but if it gets warmer you might end up with rotten meat!

Microwaves aren't good for defrosting.

I've never tried a defroster plate, but I've heard that they help a bit...

You could always leave the meat on the counter for an hour or two, to get it started, then put it in the fridge. It should only take 1 day then.

years ago our mothers thawed foods on the counter, now they say it's not a good thing,as bacteria can grow while it's defrosting. I have had good luck putting the meat still in it's packaging in a sink of cold water and running water on it. I dont use the microwave as it tends to cook the meat and turn it gray. If you have the time and know ahead when you want to cook the meat, you can put in wrapped still on a plate on the lowest shelf ( to prevent any juices from dripping and getting onto other foods) and let it defrost about 36-48 hours. I had one of those defrosting plates and it never worked for me, the ones that took 7 minutes to defrost a steak, but that was years ago and they may have changed since then.

I have never tried defrosted plates. I clean the sink, pour boiling water on all surfaces to disinfect and let the turkey with cool water but only for a few hours.
