THE HOBBIT
Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit, a little person about half the height of a man and big fat. He wears no shoes as, like all hobbits, his fett have hard soles and are covered with thick warm brown hair.
In the following passage Bilbo receives a visitor, the wizard Gandalf.
“good morning”said Bilbo, and he meant itm the sun shining , and the grass is very green. But Gandalflooked at him from under long bushy eyebrows that stuch out futher than the brim of his shady hat.
“very pretty!”said Gandalf. “but I have no time this morning. I am looking for someone to share in an adventure that I am arranging, and it’s very difficult to find anyone.”
“I should think so-in these parts! We are plain quiet folk and I have no use for adventures . Nasty disturbing., unconfortable things! Make you late for dinner! I can’t think what anybody sees in them,”said our Mr Baggins. He took out his morning letters and began to read , pretenting to take no more notice of the old man. He wanted him to go away. But the old man did not move.
“we don’t want any andventures here, thank you,”said Bilbo. “you mihgt try over The Hill or across The Watwr. Anyway, I don’t know your name”.
“you don’t know my name. I am Gandalf.”
“Gandalf, Gandalf! Good graciou me! Not the fellow Who used to rell such wonderful tales at parties? Not the man that used to make such excellent fireworks? Not the Gandalf who was responsable for so many quiet lads and lasses going off on mad anventures? Anything from climbing trees to visiting elves - or sailing in ships, sailing to other shores! Like used to be quite inter... – I mean , you used to upset things badly in these parts once upon a time...”
not wishing to seem impolit, Bilbo invites Gandalf to tea the next day. A whole company of dwarves arrives too and stays the night. Gandalf tells an exciting tale of treasure and despite himself Bilbo listens carefully.
He was getting excited and interested again, so that he forgot to keep his mouth shut. He loved maps and in his hall there hung a large one the Country Round with all his favourite walks marked on in it red ink.
“First I should like to know a bit more about things.”he said, feeling all confused and a bit shaky inside but determined to go on with things. “I should like to know about risks, out of pocket expenses, time required and remuneration and so on” – by which he meant ‘wath am I goingto get out of it’ and ‘am I going to come back alive?’
when he gets up the next day Bilbo finds everyone gone and just dirty plates left to remind him of his guests.
“what a relief” he thought,”they’ve all gone without me.”And yet in a way...
he was really relieved to think they had all gon without him and yet in a way he was a bit disappointed. This feeling surprised him. “Don’t be a fool, Bilbo Baggins!” he said to himself, “Thinking of dragons and all that nonsense at your age!”...
And to the end of his days Bilbo could never remember how he found himself outside, without a hat, a walking-stick or any money, leaving his breakfast half-finished and the washing-up not done, running as fast as his furry feet could carry him down to the Green Dragon Inn to meet the company of dwarves.
