An integer is what is more commonly known as a whole number. It may be positive, negative, or the number zero, but it must be whole. In some cases the definition of whole number will exclude the number zero, or even the set of negative numbers, but this is not as common as the more inclusive use of the term. Integers are the numbers people are most familiar with, and they serve a crucial role in virtually all mathematics.

To understand what an integer is — that is to say, why it is different than simply a ‘number’ — we must look at the other sets of numbers that can exist. Many of these sets overlap with the integer set in some areas, and some are virtually identical. Others have very little in common with any integer — these sorts of numbers tend to be much less familiar to most people.

Integer
The integers (from the Latin integer, which means with untouched integrity, whole, entire) are the set of numbers including the whole numbers (0, 1, 2, 3, …) and their negatives (0, −1, −2, −3, …). In non-mathematical terms, they are numbers that can be written without a fractional or decimal component, and fall within the set {… −2, −1, 0, 1, 2, …}. For example, 65, 7, and −756 are integers; 1.6 and 1½ are not integers.

All the positive as well as negative numbers including 0 are integers. some examples are -4, -2, -10, 0, 2, 4, 8 and so on. we can not limit integers. From every natural number we can creat new number by adding negative sign to it. 0 is only number which cannot be represented with negative sign.

I'm not sure how to completely explain an integer but i do have a cute little rhyme to help you remember how to use them! Sing this to row row row your boat, its perfect! I use this everytime i deal with integers and i'm in college lol!

"When adding integers do this, and you will be fine. Same sign add them up and always keep the sign. Different signs different rules now you must subtract, keep the sign of the larger one. Now you've got the fact!

Hope this helped : )
