I just found out that I am, in deed, 4 weeks pregnant today! I have 2 cats. We have had them for many years. I cant and wont get rid of them. I know I cant do the cat litter. What else do I have to look out for with being pregnant and having cats. Is there anything else I should be watching? Looking out for? Cant eat? Cant take? Anything. Nice answers would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Have someone clean the litter box for you and just keep the box away from you and you will be fine.
When I was pregant with twins, I had two cats and everything was fine.

There are alot of things that you should be cautious of but most of them are myths. Ask your doctor.

Dont change the cat litter or go near it get someone ese to do it. When u have ur baby is should be ok to do as long as u wash ur hands and dont let ur baby anywhere near the littet tray. Also dont let the cats anywhere near ur baby, maybe put a mosquito net over the babies cot/crib always close the door of the babies room why ur baby is asleep and just make sure u dont leave ur baby out of ur sight why the cats are inside the house try to get them used 2 going outside a bit if u can so when baby comes along they will be used 2 going outside at times and it wont be harder 4 u then. Also make sure u dust any cat fur which may be around on the furniture especially in ur babies room. Goodluck when u have ur new baby, and just bec u have a baby comming u dont have 2 get rid of ur cats just be ver careful and aware

Anyone who can't keep cats, can't raise a family correctly because they choose to not deal with extra responsibilty - when they really can.

It's not the fact that you've had them for years, it's the fact that it's not IMPOSSIBLE to raise children around cats. You know, just keep the baby's away. Doors closed. Even though I'm sure the cat will stay away. It's like like "ZOMG. BABY. ATTACK! AAAHHH!"

To have a healthy pregnancy, remember these things:

- REST. This doesn't mean be lazy. You can still work and continue on with your life. Just always make sure the baby is okay and don't overexert yourself. At the same time, exercise. So it's like.. slow down. But make sure to exercise. Overall, rest. Get it? If you sleep well, you don't get so nauseated. Take it slow in the morning. Allow yourself extra time to get ready for work. Rushing around can contribute to nausea.

- SNACK. Have some apples. Some cookies.

- ALWAYS CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR HOW THE BABY IS DOING. Probably the most sure way of having a healthy baby.

- PLAN. Buy stuff a few months early. Get a room ready filled with furniture, diapers, etc.

- TAKE VITAMINS. If you are missing out on any important foods that you need, or any deficiencies in your diet - this will make up for it. (ASK YOUR DOCTOR FIRST. He knows all.)

- BE HAPPY. Or else, it can lead to depression which will lead to POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION. Which will make you be a not so good of a mother. That probably won't happen to you, but what the heck - it's always good to make sure.

Make sure to eat healthy. Stay away from liquor, drugs, smoking, etc. :] Good luck and I wish you and your baby the best.

My OB said that I could keep my cat, and he could stay inside. He said if I needed to change the litter pan that I could, just to wear rubber gloves (like the kind you would clean the bathroom with) and a mask of some sort if possible. Also, cats like to snuggle w/ a newborn or lay beside of them.. not to harm them but cats just love to lay next to them. You have to make sure you don't leave a cat in the nursery because they can accidentally smother a newborn.
Your OB should give you a list of medications that are ok and the ones that aren't. If you have any aches/pains you can take Tylenol but I believe that is the only one (over the counter) that is safe.
CONGRATS!! : )

Congratulations first off
litter is one, pet hair might add to any exisiting allergies you have or you might develope them I did with my first. As for what you can and cant do, you will get all that plus more at your first prenatal visit with your doc. And dont be afraid to ask them questions no matter how trivial it might seem its their job to make you comfortable. One tip they dont readily share is taking your prenatal vitamins at night right before bed helps reduce the morning sickness, or at lest makes it less severe, helped me alot. And for your pregnancy be aware of what foods you do eat and if they make you sick, those are your trigger foods and should be avoided. Til you at lest deliver your bundle. Also saltines and 7 up are a great trick for helping settle the upset tummy, keep the 7 up at room temp and a sleeve of crackers pretty much with you at all times, sip and nibble slowly is key. Best of luck hun, your gonna be a good mommie. Also Ivilliage.com was a big help for both of mine look there and just ask us, we mommies alwayz like to help a new mommie.

Hugs hun

PS I totally forgot this and its important: Cats have been known to hop in to the crib and see whats in it, and in doing so accidently smother the baby. Its rare but its happened my mother in laws neighbor had it happen to her sadly and quite recently. Also they love the smell of formula or breast milk in bottles and will steal them when the babys feeding themselves. Mine didnt but I didnt give them a chance to either. I did have a beautiful black shorthair who unfortuatly got super jealous when my oldest was born and proceeded to mark her territory and bring her food up on the floor. We ended up finding her a loving child free home with some friends of the family who had 1 cat already. Shes loves it there and still cuddles when we visit. So keep those things in mind and you will be good hun

well if you think the cats are more important than the baby then keep them ....

i had the most gorgeous kitty, but once i found out i was pregnant i found him a great family! my baby comes first.

anyways... the first thing they asked me at the doctor's office is if i had any cats..... why would they ask if it werent bad for the pregnancy?? ... apparently there's something in their hair same as hamsters, rabbits, birds etc.

you could even have a miscarriage

it doesnt happen to some people but it's still a risk!

With the cats no litter changing, and no contact with feces at all (in case they have and accident)
No undercooked meet, for you or the cats, you can get exposed to the same thing from the meet as the litter and you can expose your cats to it. It is called toxoplamosis.

The obvious ones of course alcohol and tabaco products.
No HOT baths, nothing over 100 degrees F.
It raises your body temp and can cause brain damage in the baby.

You want to be sure you are taking a Prenantal vitamin with 1mg of folic acid, or just a folic acid suplement, it is one of the most important things for you to have right now as it prevents nueral tube defects.

Right now is the most important time in your babies development because all the organs and the beginings of the brain are forming, it is also the worst time to expose you baby to harmful things for that same reason.

Good luck,
I hope you get all the answers your looking for.

I have had 4 cats for ever and I never got rid of them when I had my kids. They acted exactly the same way then and didn't change at all.
I don't know why everyone thinks just because you have a baby in the house the cats are going to lay on their faces just because they may smell milk on a babies face. That is just a bunch of bull s%&t!!
What do you mean you 'can't do the cat litter?' Who has been changing the cat litter this whole time that you have had them?
As for can't eat and can't take; that makes no sense either. You can eat whatever it is that you have been eating before you got pregnant. Just watch your weight. If you get an urge to eat cheese cake, blame it on the fact that you are pregnant! Enjoy being pregnant because what the outcome is; it's awesome.
Don't freak out about your cats and don' t let anyone tell you to get rid of them . Cats have been around for centuries and there are millions of people that have babies and have cats in their homes.
I would never get rid of a pet that I have had for years. Let them sniff the baby and get used to having a new person in the house. they will not do anything to the baby at all.
Congratulations!!!
