Epidermis is live tissue made of specialized epidermal cells and is not found on woody stems or roots.

Bark is made of cork cells that soon die. The cork cells are made by the cork cambium. These cells are waterproof, so they can't exchange water with the environment and cannot survive.

So bark and epidermis are different.

epidermis is the outer most layer of tissues which forms a bodies outer surface
but in case of a tree the outer most layer is a bark but bark is a secondary meristem.and has come onto being as the dead cells are used to protect the outermost layer(the epidermis)
this protective layer is the bark

as we know epiermis is known as outer membrane of the organisms which is made up of epidermal cells. tree bark seems to us as epidermis but it is made up of dead and worn out cells of the plant.this is the reason why trunk's bark is not its epidermis
