I’ve heard people describe songs (especially “pop” music) as “not real music.” What’s some real music?

When the music is created out of expression, not an attempt to make money.

Quality music will stand the test of time. In 25 years it will sound as good as it did when it was new. Quality music can be from any genre: Rock, pop, country and hip hop, it doesn't matter. A good song is a good song no matter what kind of music it is. Quality music is a song that you will turn up when it comes on the radio even if it's the thousandth time you heard it.

Disposable music is just that, it's popular for a few months because it's trendy, but you get tired of it fast and you never want to hear it again. It's music that you wouldn't be caught dead listening to 5 years later because it's out of style or corny. Barbie Girl from Aqua and Who Let the Dogs Out comes to mind.

Real music is created from the songwriter's heart and soul. Not just for the sake of a buck. Real music stands the test of time - if someone who hears it for the first time 20 years after it was first recorded and released and instantly enjoys it - that's real music.

Real music also has a melody and a harmony, and isn't just a bunch of nonsense. There's actual lyrics. Actual tune. Not just noise.

Metal (NOT slipknot, korn, linkin park etc); many metal bands have very intricate and technically difficult passages of music to play on both guitar and drums. For example, Meshuggah, Insomnium, In Flames and other technical/melodic metal bands.

real emotions, real life, not stupid lovey dovey relationships and how you broke up and got back together. more so about real life hardships such as rape, gov't, drug problems etc. Also real melodic music thats man made not this techno computerized **** that rap is made out of. i recommend korn from their first album until 2002 (untouchables) the rest of their music is kinda lame.

Anything but Country and Rap.
^___^
And, lyrics with at least a hint of a meaning.
Thus, excluding rap.
