I've lived in the New York City metro area my entire life (all 49 years of it!). I've NEVER spent New Years Eve at Times Square, and I don't know any native New Yorkers or New Jerseyans who have ever done it either.
I think they're all just insane tourists from out of town.
You have to get there at least 6 HOURS before midnight in order to have a hope of a decent place to stand. Most years, its COLD outside on New Year's Eve, there's absolutely no place to sit, no place to get anything to eat or drink, no place to go to the bathroom; you can't bring backpacks or large bags into the cordoned off areas so you can't bring very much with you (like food and drink!); if you leave the cordoned off areas to get something to eat or drink or to find a bathroom, they won't let you back in. Not to mention the pickpockets who have a field day roaming through the crowds. Forget about it! I'll stay home and watch the insane tourists on TV, thank you....... :-)

I can't imagine why anyone would want to do such a thing ever. Even when I lived in New York I never went to Times Square in New Year's Eve. Who wants to be with a gazillion drunken people making perfect fools of themselves? Doesn't seem like much fun to me.
