Best Republican-Theodore Roosevelt-because he truly was a progressive thinker.
Best Democrat-John Kennedy, he did more for the Democratic party than any democrat in history with the possible exception of FDR. His presidency is the yardstick for the modern presidency whether you agree with it or not, he had the total package.

Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt strike me as the obvious candidates on the Republican side. Lincoln, obviously, because of the tremendous challenge of secession that he faced, though he was judged harshly by some while in office, then virtually cannonized after his assassination, making it hard to get a real feel for him. Roosevelt because of the 'progress' (there's just no better word for it, tainted though it has become, today) durring his terms.

On the Democrat side, the obvious choice is FDR. His unprecedented 3 terms and 4 electoral victories, not to mention the challenges of WWII and the Great Depression, arguing for it. OTOH, he expanded the power of the presidency with a ruthlessness and disregard for the Constitution not seen again in the 20th century (but already seen in the 21st). JFK is also an obvious contender, though he suffers from the same post-assassination halo as Lincoln. Really, asside from being young, photogenic, and shot, there is little to recomend him to history.

I guess I'd go with Roosevelt as the answer to both parts of the question. ;)

Republican - Lincoln - i mean come on he freed the slaves!

Democrat - Tough one. I would maybe say either FDR (there has to be a reason he was elected 4 times) or Truman (Marshall plan, desegregated troops, truman doctrine)

That is such a hard question to answer. First let me resolve some answers people have given. Roosevealt is not the greatest president, just look at his imperialistic ways with Panama. Nor is Kennedy nor FDR the greatest Democratic presidents. Kennedy supported a lot of policies to go into Vietnam and he didn't care much about taxcuts nor civil rights. And FDR never made a clear choice especially on his foreign policy towards World War two. He as very moderate towards his Domestic policy and very Conservative with his non-intervention policy (which is a good thing).

Best Republican President: Lincoln or Reagan
Best Democratic President: Actually I would have to say FDR

Democrat I would go with Truman. He was a man of integrity who took office during the largest war in our history. He had to make some tough decisions almost immediately at the end of the war and then worked to rebuild post war Europe and Japan.

As for a republican, Lincoln was simply the right man at the right place at the right time.
