Key West is amazing. So sad that all of these people have a negative experience. It's not the Bahamas, so don't get your hopes up. I have numerous photos that show how clear and nice the water is as well as some snorkelling pics showing the awesome fish, if you would like to see them. Key West is a bit touristy, but I would suggest going to The Dry Tortugas, by boat, and also checking out Bahia Honda State Park. Key West is very islandy, not like Giligan, as that was a FAKE TV SHOW, but the true meaning of island life. I suggest you hang with the locals while you are there. Contact me by email if you would like me to send you some info on good places to stay and such! Hope you get to go soon! I love the Keys!

i just got back from key west over christmas break!!!! i'll say that it was not what i expected:: i was hoping for a tropical type vacation like gilligans island--key west is NOT that!!! it's hard to get away from the crowds and i tried:: i took a snorkeling charter which sucked- the water is not clear(to close to the shipping lanes), the coral is not vibrant and colorful like hawaii or the bahamas, it also looked like much of the coral was destroyed by boats and ships, and the fish were minimal; i took a self guided kayak tour of the mangroves which was cool but still not very tropical--hordes of jet skis and motor boats zipping by, but i did see an eagle ray leap in the air which was awsome!!, beaches are very few in the keys but on key west Smathers beach was pretty nice(i enjoyed playing pick up volley ball)... i agree with the previous poster that it is very expensive(mostly lodging) and overrated-- duval street looks like to fun to party hard with a group of friends if you're into that--eating out was reasonably priced and quite good-- i enjoyed sitting on a deck/patio in december eating my meals---- given the amount of work it took to get there(flew into miami, then rented a car to drive the next 150 or so miles to key west, and sat in more traffic on US-1 then i would back home) i dont think i would go back-- i would recommend the bahamas anyday over key west and price wise i dont think they are much different

It's over-rated, over-priced and over-crowded. Seriously. It's mostly bars and cheesy tourist places.
I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale, only 200 miles north of Key West, so I'm allowed to say that.
