Well somebody's got to help write jokes. Yes, they're comics. David and his independent production company settled with the Writers Guild so his writers will be back to work. Same for Craig Ferguson, but not the rest.
They all do monologues. It takes a lot of people to come up with a decent monologue 5 nights a week - plus the other stuff like the Top Ten (Letterman).

Late night hosts need their writers to write jokes for them everyday. A host probably could write their own jokes but the format of today's late night shows and to do the shows five times a week, makes it impossible to put up a decent show without help.
I don't think the hosts are necessarily comics. They have the talent to take someone's idea (joke) and present it in a way that no one else can.

I always wondered that myself. Its like okay, of they're comics then why stand up their and make jokes that someone else wrote for you. Its almost like they're just reading a script that was written for them and takes away from the comedy value.
However, as someone else mentioned, they're doing this 5 nights a week. Each week,yearly.. Year after year. They obviously need a team to help each night. I am sure (depending on the comedian) that they pitch in and participate in the scripts. Some may even direct it or run it. While others may take advantage of having a team and just sit back and let them do it. At the end of the day, its THEIR show and they can do almost anything they want.
Id hope they would be right in the middle of that meeting pitching out their own jokes!

David Letterman and his company Worldwide Pants struck a deal with the WGA to have his writers and the writers for the Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson to come back to work.
They used to be stand up comics, but most of them now have their monologues and what not written by a staff of writers. They probably help, but generally wouldn't be able to keep up with everything that goes on day to day.

They are comedians, the only thing is they are one 5 times a night and they can't come up with material everyday so they need help and thats where the writers comes in, most of the time they sit with the writers and they talk which is a good joke and which isn't, things like that.

I think Conan can stand on his own since he was a writer for SNL before he became a talk show host.

Them as people are funny, and the writers are funny as in material,so them combined together would make up the best talk show.

Jay Leno is a comic. So he will do good. Letterman has his writters back so he will be as good as he always was. If you call that good. I don't know. Conan unfortunitly is on his own. That scares me. Cause i like the guy.
