Down in your system tray(lower right corner) look for the wireless icons(2) right click on one of them and make sure radio is enabled.

Use another computer, go to

http://www.netstumbler.com

Get their wireless signal strength search software ... You'll need it to detect your Wireless Acess Point or router. Copy the install file to a CD-R and Install it on your new machine.

I don't know Vista at all, but use the MS Vista help to find

DHCP

-- this is the automatic utility that goes out and reserves an IP address for you. IF DHCP is not enabled you have to do all the setup details manually.... many details....
under Win 98 / 98SE the details stayed put once you fixed them. under XP DHCP finds everything, and it's hard to force any particular variable to the value you want.

I'm avoiding Vista... my soon to be new machine will dual boot Windows XP and SUSE or Ubuntu LINUX... good bye Bill Gates and planned obsolescense // forced updates !!!

Somewhere on the sides of your laptop you'll see a switch to turn on the wireless. After that, you'll see two computer screens with like a red 'x' in the bottom right hand corner of your screen. Left or right click and click on connect to the internet. If you don't see the computer screens, then go to start, and connect to.
