Nothing went wrong, they ended up with the exact record most thought they would.
They are a mediocre team that just happened to win the games in the first half of the season, so it looked like they were better than they were.

I live in Michigan. The Lions started off good the first 8 games. They were 6 and 2, which isn't bad, but they went downhill from there. Although, they haven't been to great at all the past 10 years. Go back to the forties when they were the best team around. All the other teams got better, while the lions stayed the same. Or should i say, they stayed kittens?
