would depend on the contract and the jurisdiction.
if you invent something and then sell it to a company who then gains a patent then that invention is then the property of that company. also any work related inventions are owned by your employer if you produced the invention while performing your duties as a paid employee for that company. any company who holds a patent can enforce confidentiality concerning that patented product and all information that is related to it.
as to your question about legal and binding it would be hard to determine without a lot more information. this is an area were legal counsel would be a good place to gain answers to your particular concerns.

The fact that they are for confidentiality does not make them illegal.
