Judging by your avatar, would it be safe to guess that your favorite VDGG album is 'Still Life'??

Picking one album by each band is very tough. I really enjoy everything they've done. Each band went through different phases, strongly influenced by lineup changes.
With VDGG, the band pretty much ceased to exist after releasing 'Pawn Hearts' in 1971. They resurfaced again in 1975 with 'Godbluff'. Many hardcore fans of the band didn't care for their new sound. I admit at first that I was a bit of a skeptic, but after seeing this new lineup in concert in the autumn of 75, I was a fan reborn!
My favorite album is 'H to He Who Am The Only One' (with Robert Fripp guesting on guitar). Other's that I enjoy are;
Pawn Hearts
The Aerosol Grey Machine
The Least We Can Do is Wave to Each Other
Still Life
Godbluff

Peter Hammills 6 solo albums released between 1971-77 are fantastic also. Some of them rival VDGG!

Here's some videos taken from the recent DVD release called 'Godbluff Live 1975'. There were two releases, one was just the '75 show, the 2nd version also included some fantastic footage from a set preformed at a 1972 Belgian TV show. Try and find that one!
These are songs by earl 70's VDGG. The 1st song is a cover of 'Theme One'. It was written and originally performed by famed studio engineer/producer George Martin (George Martin Orchestra/The Beatles etc)

The picture quality on the actual DVD that the above videos were taken from surpasses these youtube uploads.
Here's some material that I still refer to as "New VDGG" (1975/6), even though it's over 30 years old...haaa!

VDGG played the 'Royal Festival Hall' a couple years ago, and they still sound great:

Hawkwind - If I had to chose one album it would be 'Space Ritual Live'. To me that was their greatest achievement! Some other albums that I really enjoy;
Doremi Fasol Latido
Astounding Sounds...Amazing Music
Warrior on the Edge of Time
Levitation (with Ginger Baker on Drums)
And many more...
Hawkwind has several cool concert DVD's available that are worth looking into;
Night of the Hawks (1984 concert)
The Chronicle of the Black Sword (1985)
Chaos (1986)
Out of the Shadows (2002)
Love in Space (2003 concert)
Live Legends (1991 concert)
Sadly there's not much in the way of any vintage Hawkwind concerts on DVD at present. Here's a few videos:

Watching the Grass Grow & Utopia...a must see! (Nick Turner was a total freak!)

Silver Machine (with Lemmy):

Wow! Here's an hour of Hawkwind from the 1984 concert DVD 'Concert at Stonehenge'...great movie!

In Search of Space and Warrior on the Edge of Time for Hawkwind. Choosing a favorite for Van Der Graaf Generator is harder for me. While I really like Hawkwind, I love VDGG. I guess it's between Pawn Hearts, The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other and Godbluff.

Good afternoon Law Man :) This will mostly be Prog-Rock, as I'm rather unsure about the other two... Mike Oldfield ~ "Tubular Bells" [1973] Mellow Candle ~ "Swaddling Songs" [1972] {Prog-Psych-Folk} Jethro Tull ~ "Aqualung" [1971] Jethro Tull ~ "Thick As a Brick" [1972] Jethro Tull ~ "Benefit" [1970] Pink Floyd ~ "Meddle" [1971] Pink Floyd ~ "The Dark Side of the Moon" [1973] The Beatles ~ "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band" [1967] These class as Blues-Rock, but some would call them Prog : Stone the Crows ~ "Ode to John Law" [1970] Stone the Crows ~ "Teenage Licks" [1971] Stone the Crows ~ "Ontinuous Performance" [1972]

Godbluff & Still Life

Fell in love w/ "Sleepwalkers' & "Scorched Earth" almost on 1st listen.

LOVED "La Rossa" right off the bat! The last 2-3 minutes were like a religious experience!
