Had a big leak in the van on the front of the crankshaft. Figured it was the seal, so replaced it. Still leaked lots. The oil was getting the timing belt slippery and slipping the water pump roller so it would overheat the engine.
Neighbour mechanic said it was coming from the front crankshaft cover. Is this likely??

I would look at these, in this order:

1. Cam seal
2. crank seal
3. Oil pump
4. headgasket
5. oil pan

it extremely is a hard question! reckoning on how long or how badly the headgasket has been leaking, it would desire to have executed different engine injury. If the coolant leaks into the oil, which could injury the engines bearings. If the automobile has some cost to it, then it would desire to be nicely worth fixing, even though it the restoration is a 0.33 or extra of the automobiles cost, it would desire to be time to easily sell it for what you may and purchase a extra solid automobile.

Hmm... I have seen this a few times the best thing I can tell you for an easy quick fix is to locate the exact exit point on your oil pan (I know its trick). then go buy oil change stuff and some cheap break clean. 1.) Then drain your oil. 2.) spray the oil leak down with the break clean.(Also look for any oil leaks from the top of the motor that may leak down get them as well.) 3.) apply a good bead of rtv sealant around the leak use your finger to smooth it out and get it tied in good. ( This is were your choice comes in the better way would be to loosen the bolts and push sealant in there and torque the pan back down.) 4.) change the filter and add oil. Also for your belt. If there is that much oil on it spray it with break clean or change it likewise. As far as the timing belt slipping I don't know about that I have seen them jump a tooth and break but not slip possible thought. I would say more likely your your low engine oil is heating the crank in bearings >block> heads> overheating the bottom end is cooled/lubricated by the oil in the pan. If you got something else shoot me a question

You'll have to get it complely clean before you can see it, but look close at the front of the valve covers. and if it has a timing belt, that has to be changed after the leak is fixed. And make sure it's not the water pump but the anti freeze looks black after mixing w/ the dirt.

yes its very possible that is where its coming from, clean it off and start it and see if you can see where its coming from, there's two seals in behind the belt that it could be leaking from, either the cam seal or the crank seal,if i was you and i tore it down to repair it ,id replace both of them,it will save you a lot of problems later on with it,if one is worn out the other is about to go bad, good luck with it,your may Be a cam seal since its getting the belt wet with oil, have a good new years.

It could very well be, or the timing cover could be split.
