It's great to see Buffalo and Pittsburgh In the Old White Sabres and Pit in the Dark for the Winter classic.

Traditionally, NHL teams have worn dark uniforms at home (1917-1970, 2003-present). For a 33 year period, they wore white....just a ripple in the league's history.

Dark jerseys outsell white jerseys 2-1 so obviously it's the fans preference as well.

As to the user who said

'it takes a while to get used to - sometimes I don't know where they are playing'

Might I suggest you look at centre ice where the logos are?!!

I don't like it but why in "hockey" should it be the other way around. Prior to expansion in 1967, the home teams wore their dark jerseys as they do now. The whole white at home is a fairly recent trend in the NHL given its long history.

The real reason is teams mostly had their third jerseys in dark colors and dragging extra jerseys around on long road trips was a pain. But now we have no third jerseys so, yeah, go back to whites at home.

I grew up watching teams wearing home whites. I think the white uniforms usually look better because you can see more details in the logos contrasting with the white background. Some of the home darks are hideous: Anaheim, Philadelphia, Nashville, just to name a few.

I like the white as the home jerseys.

For some reason I like the idea that the white on the jersey matches the color of the ice, so when white is the home jersey it is like saying this is your ice, this is your home arena. And the dark color looks out of place so they are the visitor.
I know its weird.

I like dark home jerseys, but then I'm Old old school, as in Original Six. I think white is just fine for visiting teams.

It was originally Whites at Home and Darks on the road because ... are you ready for this.... So they wouldn't have to wash them as often when travelling. The old sweaters were wool and wouldn't be dry in time for the next game if they were washed. Today it doesn't matter with the new space age Bettman RBK's. Usually the dark sweaters are better sellers and therefore shown at home to increase sales.

Dark Home Jersey's are fine.
Apparently that's the way it used to be back in the good old days.

Other sports use dark jerseys at home. Why shouldn't hockey?

I prefer home whites, because I like seeing the parade of the other teams' colors come through over the course of the season.
