Ivy Goldstein Jacobson, has to be my #1 all time, favorite. Now out of print, her books can still be bought and are well worth the effort to aquire them. I believe she wrote the most definative guide on horary astrology ever written.
I find the best source of used and out of print books is:
http://www.barnesandnoble.com go to the used and out of print books and put in the author name. Most all have a ship rate of $3.89. Cheaper than ebay. Another source for Jacobson's works is:

or

Liz Green is an excellent author (and you know she and Robert Hand host the astro.com site).
I put these in the same catagory, all very good:
Liz Green
Robert Hand
Steven Arroyo
Jean Avery
Psychological influence of astrology:
Dane Rudhyard
Noel Tyl
both these authors can be a little heady, but the work is worthwhile reading. Tyl did a series of books on counseling using the natal chart.
As a teaching tool:
March & McEvers "The only way to learn astrology" series
which I used for beginning students back in the day.
For home reference, these are must have's:
Astrologer's handbook (Sakoian and Acker)
Transits (Sakoian and Acker)
Planets in transit (Robert Hand)
Jacobson is an easy read, and she does lots of example charts and delinations. She does jump around a bit, but for anyone who has a bare bones knowledge, she definately has food for thought. Just a great, easy reading style.
Enjoy!

Dane Rudhyar, Noel Tyl, Robert Hand, Robert Pelletier, Tracy Marks, Doris Chase Doane, Stephen Arroyo, Frances Sakoian and Louis Acker, Ivy Goldstein Jacobson, Rex Bills Linda Goodman is not an astrology writer for astrologers ... her information is too simplistic and she neither teaches the principles of astrology nor does she go beyond the signs.

Hi,
I love the Liz Greene and Howard Sasportas seminars books. They are fabulous. However as an astrologer who also enjoys a more traditional astrological approach I also really love John Frawley.
But there are so many good authors in astrology out there!
