It is 23 years old and has not been post marked and in time may be of value! Or will it be better to leave on envelope untouched?

The best means to protect the stamp is to leave it on the envelope as attached. The process to remove the stamps involves a soaking of the stamp in warm water to loosen the glue. The stamp is CAREFULLY soaked and once the adhesive is loose, the stamp most times will float to the top of the water where it can be retrieved with forceps and placed on wax paper to dry.

I haven't done this process in many, many years, but it's what I did in the past as a collector. I hope this works for you. If it unnerves you to try this, your best bet it to leave the stamp intact and take it to a trusted collector for review.

If it's a "Peel & Stick" Stamp, there's no way to remove the Stamp without damaging it. The Steam removal method works best on "Lick & Stick" Stamps. For the Modern Stamp, just carefully cut around the outer perimeter of the Stamp, and leave the Paper intact with the Stamp. If You wish to Re-Use the Stamp, just dab some White Elmer's Glue to the back of the Stamp, and place it on the Envelope You wish to use. And, for a little added Security, dab a little on the Front of the Stamp, and spread it around. The Machine at the Post Office will Read the Stamp just fine. I've done it many Times.Hope this Helps !

Don't do anything until you take it to a collectables place specializing in stamps and coins. If you remove it from the envelope, that may damage the value. Sometimes, the cancellation from the post office is worth just as much as the stamp.

You may want to test any removal method with a useless stamp. I would recommend that you try something called Unglue by Uhu.

I have used it to remove stickers and the like from a number of sources and it worked great for me, but I have never tried it for this. Another thing to consider is that this product is rather oily and might damage the ink on the stamp. I would suggest that you contact the post office website to see if they offer suggestions. Also, check to see if any of the collector groups in your area have methods that they recommend.

Best of luck!

23 years old... a 1984-85 era stamp, so it should still be lick-n-stick rather than these pesky self-adhesive things today.

First, check to make sure it's not a first-day issue (rather obvious) or of historical / sentimental value... if it's just a regular stamp and postmark, feel free to remove it.

In my 15 years of collecting I would always soak or steam those old stamps, and then dry them tween paper-towels and pressed tween two books.

GOOD Luck & Happy New Years !

I would leave it on the envelope or cut around it so it fits in the stamp book. Don't take the chance of damaging it.

Just cut the part of the envelope out (wherever the stamp is), and try to remove the back with steam.

steam works. Take it off the envelope unless you damage it.
