You are visiting New York City and are allowed to travel to the top of the Empire State Building. You're curious to know how tall the building is and, rather than research the height of the building, you decide to put your Algebra 2 skills to good use and calculate the height of the building by experimenting. You spit over the edge of the railing (by letting the spit dangle and drop, thus imparting no initial velocity) and time how long it takes it to reach the ground. If it takes 8 1/8 seconds to land, how tall was the building?

This is a different type of problem. Haven't worked with these in class yet. We were supposed to figure it out over vacation.

if gravity accelleration = 9.8 meters/ (sec^2)
initial veloctiy = 0
time to fall is = 8.5secs

(1/2)*9.8*(8.5)^2

distance = (velocity initial)*(time)+ (1/2)(acceleration)(time squared) + C*
C* = not important in the problem. its a calculus thing :-Þ

use the gravity formula
distance = 1/2 *g *t^2

g = 32 ft/sec^2
t = time

1/2 * 32ft/sec^2 * (8.125sec)^2 = 1056.25 ft

building is 16(8 1/8)^2 ft = 1056.25 ft

use h = -16t2+vot+ho
(2 is supposed to be squared)
(the o's are original velocity and original height)
(-16 is the acceleration of gravity in feet/second squared)
so then you can plug in 8.5 seconds for time, and 0 for height.
initial velocity is 0
0 = -16(8.5)2+0(8.5)+ho
0 = -1156+0+ho
1156=ho
original height (or height of the empire state building is 1156 feet.
