why do we shake our head when we want to get rid of a thought?

our brains are receptors and can connect with the frequency of thoughts, faster than the speed of light, and we subconsciously know we can shake it loose.

Perhaps because since we know the phrase: "Shake the thought away", thats what we subconsciously do first, shake our head.
