How often do you change these if you run one all day and night during the heating months? Do you have to add something to the water?

PS_ I clean out the water area once a week.

I think it depends on the make and model..I have a newer Vicks humidifier and I think they recommend changing the filter every 60 days. You should be able to find the owner's manual online on the manufacture's website.

It depends on the model. I have a Hunter that recommends soaking the filter in a 50% white vinegar/water mixture every 3 months to remove the hard water build up. It is a cold humidifier.

I would check the manufacture's website for their recommendations. If the manufacture recommendations cost more than $30 per year, I would look for one like the Hunter that has a permanent filter that only requires regular cleaning and not replacement.

Whenever the filter looks dirty enough you can't stand it. There is no set period, it's a matter of how much the machine operates and the quality of the air in the room. re: dust, smoke, etc.
