You should use certain email addresses for certain things. Like 1 for family and friends, and 1 for financial stuff. Just don't use the same passwords!

You should have, on average, 3 email addresses.
1. for family & friends
2. for banking, shopping, exc.
3. for browsing shopping sites, signing up for news letters, and any other random stuff that can be tracked and generate spam.

I have ATT-yahoo dsl, which allows me to create disposable addresses. I use my main one for email from friends/family/things I really want to hear about, but use a disposable for registering games/any site that requires me to sign-up with an email. My main gets no spam, but there's probably several hundred spam emails to the other one, but that doesn't bother me, as 99.9% is caught by the span blocker, and even if it isn't, I can delete the disposable address any time I like.

No, use one email address for sites you trust.
Use a throwaway email (such as gmail.com or yahoo.com email) for sites you don't trust. If you don't know if it's a major corporation or the company is trustworthy, then use the throwaway email address.
The reason you should use at least 2 emails is that if you sign up for enough sites, you will eventually start receiving more and more spam because some companies and individuals will sell your email address to spammers. If you're using a gmail or Yahoo, they have spam detection (Gmail's is best), so you won't have to wade through as much spam.

It is advisable to have three e-mail boxes: one for work; one for friends or personal; one for spam.

I would concentrate on using your main one with common sense...
and try to make sure that you and your friends and family utilize common sense and basic security aware practices such as not forwarding jokes to everyone in their address book, making use of the BCC field when sending to multiple people, not posting your email address in forums or subscribing to lists... etc...
If you are going to be subscribing to internet lists and things like that then you might want to create a "throwaway" account or use a fake one for those websites that require an email ...
Good Luck
