Because of the Iowa caucuses, which will be held on January 3rd. The caucus gives an early indication of how the candidates are doing. Usually a few of those at the very bottom of the list will end up dropping out after Iowa, but as far as determining who will eventually get the party nomination, Iowa has no more say than any other state does. Iowa caucus winners only go on to win the party nomination about 55% of the time.
