How can people bend their backs so much that they're pretty much a U? I understand people getting flexible by stretching and being able to do the splits and stuff. But the way some really flexible people bend their backs just seems so impossible. Like when I try it seems just as impossible as trying to get my knees to bend the other way.

Well, I'm pretty flexible myself. I can do the splits and all. And I can do a bridge. When I said U though, what I really meant was people that can like touch the back of their heads to their butts. It's just weird idk.

I'd like to know their secret, too!!! Well, I know this little 9 year old girl who can bend herself inside out and every which-way that you didn't think was possible (like bend around backwards and put her ankles on either side of her head - AAH!), and it's partially because she stretches a LOT, but mostly because she has a different type of cartilage than most people. (Like, she can push her nose flat against her face.) I think it's SO COOL when people are that 'stretchy!' I wish I was! :D

Some people are born with hyper extended backs and muscles. My back is hyper extended. It's weird. Look at some websites and see if there are certain back stretches that you could do.

some say it may be because of genes, but even without the genes, u can be just as flexible! just keep on working at it and stretch everyday. no one becomes flexible overnight. it takes many months or even years! some stretches that might help might be to do the bridge and also something called "basket". im sure that you would noe wat the bridge is--you use your hands and legs to support the rest of your body in a upsidedown U shape. What "basket" really is is to use your hands to hold on to ur ankle and then lift your uppper body up while holding on to ur ankle. you should beable to form a U shape with your body but u may rock a bit. you could also use your hands to hold your inner thigh and pull your upper body up and try to look towards the ceiling.

Partially genetics but mostly it comes from years of daily stretching and bending routines. It's like most things that we all find difficult and amazing, nothing happens overnight it takes practice, practice, practice.

I can do that U thing your talking about. I call it a bridge. I can just bend backwards and go right into it, but I started out by laying flat on my back. Then raising my arms up to my head. The bend your elbows and push your body up while bending your knees to push yourself up off the floor like a little table. May sound complicated but it not. After a while of doing this, your back gets more and more flexible. Soon you can do it from standing up.
