I have been trying to find the same thing. I have found garnets and lots of quartz while I was gold panning. There have been diamonds found in Shelby and St. Claire counties. Some have said tourmaline, sapphires, and turquoise relatives.
Not gemstones but: AL also has a gold belt that goes from Chilton County Northeast to join GA gold belt. Some nuggets found in the past and lots of flake to fine gold. Eastern gold is of higher purity that CA or AK gold usually.

We've got garnets out the wazoo from the metamorphism, but I am not sure what percentage are gem quality. I have seen some nice porphyroblasts though.
There's also tons of mica, which isn't a gemstone, but is very, very economically valuable.
Then there's quartz, but you can find that anywhere in any colour.
