All of that and worse. Try country folk lore crossed with Asian traditions. At midnight I have to eat a noodle soup with an extremely long noodle so I will have a long life. I can't sweep or dust tomorrow or there goes the good luck. I have to put an orchid on my dining table for good fortune. Instead of pig's feet, greens and black eyed peas, we have to eat something wonderful so we will have great food the whole year. At midnight I have to step outside and watch the city fireworks while banging pots and pans to usher in the New Year and all of the luck it brings. Then tomorrow I have to give a gift to my elders to show appreciation to them. But I have done the black eyed peas with my family too. Give me enough fried potatoes and I can eat anything! Happy New Year and I will say Good Fortune for you at midnight while I am clanking pans together!!

I was told to eat it while younger and never did because I dislike vegies. I do not know if there's connection between those beliefs and fate.

Not me but I've heard of this. I think its pretty common. They were talking about it on the Martha Stewart Show. A lady in the audience was saying she needed a good cabbage recipe too. Cabbage was suppose to symbolize money.
