I'm traveling abroad in England next year and my girlfriend will be in Durham, so I'm just trying to find the cheapest way between both cities.

Thanks!

If you would like to travel up there for as little as possible but don't mind spending the day traveling, I would recommend a combination of two modes of transport.
If you book around a month in advance, travel with Megabus from London Victoria Coach Station to Newcastle (Not far north of Durham) for as little as £1.
Then, get one of the many trains from Newcastle Central to Durham (Journey time around 12 or 14 minutes) for £4.80 single.
With this combination, you are traveling around 250 - 300 miles for the price of a Fast Food Meal!
If you want to get there more quickly and don't mind spending more though, try advance booking with National Express East Coast and collecting your tickets from Kings Cross Station. They run a number of trains from London Kings Cross to Durham each day and Advance singles start at £10.20p. For prices like this though, you would need to book around 28 days in advance (the flexible full price single is £124!). Good luck.

The simplest and fastest way is to travel by NationalExpress East Coast train from London Kings Cross Station. Trains run every hour and the average journey time is about 3 hours.
The cheapest fares are those you book in advance - www.nationalexpresseastcoast.com, or visit Kings Cross Station. If you are unable to book in advance travel after 9-30am and ask for a 'Saver' Ticket.

coach isn't terribly comfortable but usually cheaper, rail is usually more expensive. Not much to choose between them. Suggestion. Durham would be cheaper for you to use as a base if on holiday here, Otherwise perhaps the girl would like to be relocated to London (warning London prices are through the roof.)
