I have a 1989 toyota corolla with a carbureted engine. (Manual Transmission) When I turn on the parking lights, it idles to about 850. I would like my car to idle at about 650. any suggestions?

Sounds to me like a weak alternator and or battery. the lights are pulling more current than the engine can produce at 650 rpms so it has to idle up to 850 to spin the alternator fast enough to keep up with the current draw.

To adjust the idle, turn down the idle screw, but I don't understand the idle going up when the parking lights go on. Sure, the parking lights put a drain on the electrical system that the alternator compensates for, but I don't believe that it should cause the engine to go up 200 RPM.

650rpm is to low,850 is factory setting for curb idle setting

this is a carb'ed engine! EFI & they'd be right. What else comes on or goes off? Have a look & listen. perhaps a vacuum unit or fast idle solenoid is kicking in to do it? If fast idle solenoid, then prob a normal action with headlights, and your old switch is shot and turning it on early. I wouldn't worry abt it, only Volvo's drive on park lights.

Really don't know, cars have changed so much in design since I last worked on one, but at a guess I am wondering what the parking lights have to do with idle? Could there be a wiring problem to the parking lights causing them to draw more current and increase the demand on the battery? (using this logic, the alternator would have to work harder thereby demanding more from the engine) Its only a guess.

Time for a new battery. The engine is responding to a load on the alternator caused by the parking light load not being absorbed by the battery.

Sounds like your battery is low... turning on the lights drains it even faster, so the idler kicks up to charge the battery .

It's the extra load on the alternator that does it, it's normal...
